Grand total: 411 assembly elections held across all states and UTs since 1951/52 (28 states + Delhi, J&K, Puducherry – current geographic territory).
Caveats worth noting:
- Telangana’s count of 3 reflects only elections held as a separate state (formed 2014: 2014, 2018, 2023). The 1952 Hyderabad State election isn’t counted here since Hyderabad State was a distinct pre-reorganisation entity, not Telangana — if you want to include it as a historical predecessor, the count becomes 4.
- Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand all sit at the bottom largely because they were only carved out in 2000.
- Kerala tops the list at 19 partly because of its Thiru-Kochi-era elections (1952, 1954, 1957) before the state was reorganised on linguistic lines in 1956, plus a genuinely high frequency of early dissolutions in the 1960s.
