Beijing has become a live testing ground for humanoid robotics as 2,056 robots representing 666 teams compete in the second World Humanoid Robot Games.
The five-day event, being held from 22 to 26 August at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, features races, football, fighting, dance and real-world service challenges.

Robots face tougher standards

Except for the 100-metre and 400-metre hurdle events, robots in track competitions and other competitive categories must operate fully autonomously.
That requirement is crucial: it distinguishes genuine machine perception and decision-making from a performance primarily controlled by a human operator.

The event includes a seven-a-side football exhibition and five-a-side competition. Robot players are being tested on dribbling, shooting, goalkeeping, spatial awareness and team coordination.
Scenario-based competitions move beyond spectacle. Tasks such as emergency response, hospitality work and precision handling examine whether humanoid machines can operate reliably in environments designed for people.
Why this matters
Humanoid robotics faces a difficult engineering combination: walking without falling, identifying objects, responding quickly, manipulating small items and making decisions in unpredictable surroundings.
The Games provide a common competitive environment in which these capabilities can be observed. They do not, by themselves, prove that humanoid robots are ready for unrestricted deployment in homes, factories or public spaces.
