A total solar eclipse is sweeping across parts of the Northern Hemisphere on 12 August 2026, producing complete darkness along a narrow path through Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the North Atlantic, Spain and a small part of Portugal.
For India, however, the answer to the question dominating internet searches is straightforward: the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse will not be visible from anywhere in the country — not even as a partial eclipse.
NASA’s eclipse map places India entirely outside both the path of totality and the wider partial-eclipse zone. The partial phase instead extends across parts of North America, most of Europe and northwestern Africa.
This geographical fact also answers another widely searched question in India: under the traditional visibility-based Panchang convention, Sutak is not applicable for this eclipse in India. Panchangs also explicitly list the eclipse as not visible in the country and mark both the beginning and end of Sutak as “Not Applicable”. The eclipse calculation also states that no phase of the eclipse is visible from India.

Why can India not see the 12 August solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is not an event that becomes visible simultaneously from the entire Earth.
It occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but the Moon’s shadow covers only a particular section of the Earth’s daylight side.
The innermost shadow, or umbra, produces a total eclipse. A much larger surrounding shadow, the penumbra, produces a partial eclipse.
NASA’s 12 August map shows the umbral path travelling through Greenland, Iceland and Spain, while the wider partial-eclipse zone spreads across much of Europe, northern North America and northwestern Africa. India lies outside both.
That distinction is important because reports describing the eclipse simply as a “global solar eclipse” can create the impression that it should be observable everywhere.

The country is outside the eclipse visibility zone altogether. The calculations similarly state that none of this eclipse will be visible from India, along with several other Asian countries.
Where will the total solar eclipse actually be visible?
The narrow path of totality crosses some remarkable geography.
NASA lists Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a small corner of Portugal within the total-eclipse region.

The difference between Zaragoza experiencing totality and Madrid experiencing 99% coverage also demonstrates a central feature of solar eclipses: 99% is still not totality. The umbral path is extremely narrow.
Is there Sutak Kaal in India on 12 August 2026?
For people following Hindu eclipse observances, this is probably the most important India-specific question.
The traditional Panchang practice generally applied in such cases links Sutak observance to an eclipse being visible at the observer’s location.
Because the 12 August eclipse is not visible in India, there will be no Sutak Kaal – or now Special Sutak for children, elderly and ill.
This is best understood as a traditional religious convention, not an astronomical rule. Astronomy determines whether an eclipse is physically visible; Panchang traditions determine how believers apply religious observances to that visibility.
Therefore, it would be misleading to say that because a solar eclipse is occurring somewhere on Earth, normal eclipse restrictions necessarily apply throughout India.
When is the next solar eclipse that India can actually see?
The next solar eclipse visible from India is expected on 2 August 2027. Globally, it will be a total solar eclipse, but India will see only a partial eclipse.

Timeanddate’s calculations show substantial geographical variation within India: Mumbai, for example, will see considerably greater coverage than Delhi or Kolkata.
When will India see a total solar eclipse again?
The much longer wait is for totality.
Current eclipse calculations show that the 20 March 2034 total solar eclipse will have a path of totality crossing parts of India. Timeanddate lists India among the countries from which the 2034 event will be visible as a total solar eclipse, with the broader eclipse occurring over India between approximately 4:11 PM and 6:24 PM IST, depending on location.
That does not mean every Indian city will experience totality. As with today’s eclipse in Spain, only locations inside the narrow umbral path will see the Sun completely covered.

The critical distinction is always between the global classification of an eclipse and what an observer at a specific location actually sees.
Why solar eclipses remain scientifically valuable
A total eclipse temporarily blocks the intensely bright photosphere, allowing the Sun’s faint outer atmosphere — the corona — to become visible from Earth.
NASA notes that observers within the central path will see complete coverage for generally less than two minutes during today’s event, although the maximum theoretical duration reaches 2 minutes 18.2 seconds.
Outside totality, the Sun remains dangerously bright.
NASA warns that during all partial phases, observers must use proper solar-viewing glasses or suitable solar filters. Regular sunglasses are not safe. Cameras, telescopes and binoculars also require appropriately mounted solar filters rather than relying on eclipse glasses worn by the observer.
For Indians, this warning is relevant mainly to anyone travelling abroad to observe the eclipse or following future eclipses visible from India: there is no Sun to observe through an eclipse filter from India tonight because the eclipse itself is not visible here.
