Football is about to take over the planet, but the NBA Finals just delivered its own global thunderclap.

Sport is entering one of those dense weeks when one global event begins before another has finished shouting.

The FIFA World Cup opens on June 11 with Mexico facing South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. FIFA’s schedule confirms the opening fixture, while the tournament will run across the United States, Mexico and Canada with 48 teams and 104 matches.

The opening match will be officiated by an all-Brazilian referee team led by Wilton Sampaio, supported by Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia. The tournament has selected 52 referees and 88 assistant referees for its expanded format.

But before football consumes the screen, Victor Wembanyama pulled the NBA Finals back into global conversation. The San Antonio Spurs beat the New York Knicks 115-111 in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden, cutting New York’s series lead to 2-1. Wembanyama delivered 32 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks, while Stephon Castle added 23 points.

The win ended New York’s long postseason surge and restored competitive oxygen to the series. It also gave the NBA exactly what it needed before the World Cup begins: a Finals story with a global star, a historic arena, a tense series and a performance worthy of replay.

Sports attention is not infinite. Once Mexico and South Africa kick off, football will dominate. But Wembanyama’s Game 3 ensured basketball will not quietly exit the global stage.

What To Watch Next

Game 4 in New York now carries more weight than expected. For football, the question is operational: can the biggest World Cup in history begin cleanly? For basketball, the question is psychological: did Wembanyama just change the series?
