Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man film has overtaken Avengers: Endgame in nominal opening-day revenue—but not after adjusting for inflation

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has recorded an estimated $168 million opening day in North America, establishing a new unadjusted first-day box-office record.

Sony Pictures confirmed that the film earned the amount from 4,487 locations. The total included approximately $72 million from preview screenings, itself above the previous preview record of $60 million held by Avengers: Endgame.

The $168 million opening exceeded the $157.4 million collected by Avengers: Endgame on its first day in April 2019.

That comparison, however, is in nominal dollars. Screen International calculated that the Endgame opening would be worth approximately $205 million in 2026 pricesBrand New Day has therefore set the published unadjusted record, but it has not surpassed Endgame in inflation-adjusted terms.

The Run

DevelopmentWhy it matters
North American opening day$168 millionHighest unadjusted opening day reported in the market
Preview revenue$72 millionAbove Endgame’s previous $60 million preview record
Weekend projectionAround $325 million, according to Sony sourcesWould probably become the second-largest unadjusted domestic opening weekend
Google search interestMore than 100,000 active searches on Google’s main Trending Now pageConfirms substantial public-information demand beyond box-office reporting
India search interestMore than 50,000 active searches on Google’s India pageShows exceptional visibility in a major overseas cinema market
India box-office estimateApproximately ₹215.47 crore gross during its first three daysIndicates one of the strongest Hollywood openings recorded in India

The opening-day record in perspective

FilmNorth American opening day, unadjustedPreview component
Spider-Man: Brand New Day$168 million$72 million
Avengers: Endgame$157.4 million$60 million
Spider-Man: No Way HomeAround $122 million$50 million

Brand New Day opened approximately 6.7 per cent above the unadjusted first-day figure for Endgame. Its preview earnings were 20 per cent higher.

Nevertheless, the comparison is influenced by longer preview windows, higher ticket prices, premium formats and inflation. Some preview shows for the new film began considerably earlier in the day than those for Endgame, giving cinemas additional screening capacity.

Can it break the full-weekend record?

Sony sources projected a North American opening weekend of approximately $325 million.

If that estimate holds, the film would comfortably exceed the $260.1 million opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home and become the second-highest unadjusted domestic opening weekend. It would remain behind the $357.1 million record established by Avengers: Endgame.

India becomes a central part of the global Spider-Man story

Trade-tracker estimates reported in different media stroies placed the film’s first three days in India at approximately ₹215.47 crore gross, including ₹72.44 crore on its opening day.

The film was released in India in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, one day before its US opening. The figures remain industry estimates rather than an audited studio statement, but they indicate an unusually large opening for a non-Indian production.

Search demand and the piracy paradox

Google Trends listed “spiderman brand new day” as an active search trend with more than 100,000 searches on its general Trending Now page. The India page recorded more than 50,000 searches, while strong activity was also visible in the United Kingdom, United States and several other markets.

The film also received additional online attention after an unauthorised copy circulated on X for several hours and reportedly reached millions of accounts before removal efforts intensified. Despite the leak, cinema attendance remained exceptionally strong, suggesting that large-format viewing, franchise loyalty and event-style marketing outweighed the immediate piracy risk.

Nine145 assessment

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered a genuine unadjusted opening-day record and a major international cultural event.

The more consequential test is still ahead. Its final Sunday revenue, overseas total and performance during the second weekend will reveal whether the film represents a short-lived fan rush or a sustained theatrical phenomenon capable of challenging the largest releases in cinema history.
