Strategic Context of the Summits
- The “Nordic Model”: India views these summits as a way to tap into Nordic expertise in sustainability, innovation, and clean energy. Each summit typically results in a Joint Statement reaffirming a commitment to a rules-based international order.
- Expansion of Bilateral Ties: These summits are often paired with bilateral visits. For instance, the 2018 summit was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Sweden in 30 years, and the 2022 summit marked a significant strengthening of the “Green Strategic Partnership” with Denmark.
- The 2026 Milestone: The 3rd Summit in Oslo is particularly high-stakes as it follows the landmark India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which aims to bring $100 billion in investment into India over the next 15 years.
