Greenland / alliance-friction and “might-makes-right” warnings (Jan 2026)
Emmanuel Macron (France, President): warned the U.S. under Trump was “breaking free from international rules.”
Macron: said the U.S. was “gradually turning away” from allies.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier (Germany, President): warned of a breakdown of values by the U.S. undermining world order.
Steinmeier: warned against the world becoming a “den of robbers.”
Mette Frederiksen (Denmark, PM): said Trump should be taken seriously on Greenland ambition.
Frederiksen: warned a U.S. attack on a NATO ally would mean “everything stops” (including NATO security).
Giorgia Meloni (Italy, PM): said Italy would not support U.S. military action to take Greenland.
Meloni: said such a move would have serious consequences for NATO and help nobody.
Greenland party leaders (joint statement): said “We don’t want to be Americans… we want to be Greenlanders.”
