Tamil Nadu voted on 23 April 2026, with counting on 4 May. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by C. Joseph Vijay, won 108 of 234 seats, ahead of DMK’s 59 and AIADMK’s 47, but ten short of the 118-seat majority mark. Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on 10 May 2026.

A complete count produced a fragmented chamber

The Election Commission of India recorded results for all 234 constituencies. TVK won 108 seats, DMK 59 and ADMK 47. The remaining 20 seats were divided among nine parties.

A party needed 118 seats for a majority. TVK therefore finished ten seats below that line, even though it held 46.2% of all Assembly seats.

The distance to 118 is arithmetic, not a political prediction

The coalition tool lets readers add party totals and see when a combination reaches the majority mark. It does not assume that any two parties would negotiate, cooperate or form a government.

This distinction matters in election graphics: a possible numerical combination is not evidence of a possible political agreement.

The largest shifts were concentrated in the biggest parties

The 2021 Assembly had given DMK 133 seats and ADMK 66. In 2026, those totals were 59 and 47 respectively. TVK, which had no seats in the 2021 party table, won 108 in 2026.

The smaller-party changes were measured in single digits. INC moved from 18 seats to five; BJP from four to one; PMK from five to four. CPI and CPI(M) remained at two seats each.

Three constituency results put names to the political shift

TVK’s V. S. Babu defeated M. K. Stalin in Kolathur by 8,795 votes. Babu received 82,997 votes, against Stalin’s 74,202.

Vijay won both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East. The victories gave the election’s largest party a leader elected from two constituencies; he was sworn in as Chief Minister on 10 May.

October’s by-elections belong to a separate result

TVK subsequently won the October by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram. K. Maragatham Kumaravel won Madurantakam with 74,048 votes and a margin of 20,040. P. Sathyabama won Dharapuram with 66,841 votes and a margin of 9,471.

The interactive chamber, party bars and historical comparison in this article retain the May general-election result: 108 seats for TVK. The October victories are reported separately and are not added to that historical tally or presented as a complete account of the Assembly’s current membership.
