India’s Index of Industrial Production rose 6.7% year on year in September 2026, according to the government’s quick estimate. Manufacturing grew 7.6%, electricity and gas supply 11.2%, and 17 of 23 manufacturing groups recorded expansion.

READOUT 01

Growth remained strong, although it eased from August

The general IIP stood at 124.3 in September, against 116.5 a year earlier. The resulting 6.7% growth rate was lower than August’s revised 8.0%, making September a month of continued expansion with some moderation in the headline pace.

The fastest rate was not automatically the largest contribution

MoSPI identified motor vehicles, electrical equipment, and rubber and plastics as the top three positive contributors to manufacturing growth. That list differs from a simple ranking of percentage changes because each group carries a different weight in the index.
