A magnitude 7.7 earthquake tore through the seabed off Flores Island in eastern Indonesia before dawn on Saturday, 15 August 2026, flattening homes, cutting off remote villages under landslides, and pushing the archipelago’s disaster machinery into a race against time. By Sunday morning, the confirmed death toll had climbed to 51, with 36 people seriously injured and 77 more nursing lighter wounds, according to figures released by Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and its deputy health minister. Rescue teams admit the count is unlikely to be final; several regencies closest to the epicentre remain unreachable by road.
The Main Shock: What USGS and BMKG Recorded
The earthquake struck at 05:58 local time (21:58 GMT on 14 August), with its rupture centred beneath the Flores Sea. The United States Geological Survey placed the hypocentre roughly 68 kilometres north-northwest of Ende, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, and estimated a rupture footprint stretching 90 by 45 kilometres. Indonesia’s own Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) logged a marginally different location — about 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo regency — at a depth of 15 kilometres, a routine variance that arises from differing seismic-network calibrations rather than any real dispute about the quake’s scale.
Germany’s GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences independently verified the event at moment magnitude 7.61, with a deeper estimate of 25 kilometres, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre logged the depth at 35 kilometres. Despite the spread in depth estimates — a common feature of offshore thrust earthquakes where seafloor instrumentation is sparse — every major monitoring body agreed on the essential fact: this was a shallow, high-magnitude rupture on the Flores back-arc thrust fault, a system BMKG’s director Wijayanto confirmed had already been flagged by geologists as capable of producing quakes up to magnitude 7.8–7.9.
BMKG’s shake-intensity mapping recorded Modified Mercalli Intensity VII — “very strong” shaking capable of damaging even well-built structures — across Aesesa, Riung and Mbay. The USGS’s own population-exposure model estimated that roughly 56,000 people felt severe shaking, with a further 420,000 experiencing very strong tremors and more than 11 million feeling light shaking across the wider region. The agency issued a Yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, indicating a response typically required at a regional rather than national scale, with projected economic losses under one per cent of Indonesia’s GDP.
Tsunami Warning, Then Stand-Down
Within minutes of the shock, BMKG issued a tsunami warning for coastal East Nusa Tenggara, urging residents to move inland and to higher ground. Around 2,000 residents of Nagekeo regency undertook self-evacuation even before the formal alert reached them, driven by the sheer intensity of the shaking and memories of past coastal disasters. Tide-gauge monitoring subsequently recorded tsunami waves of under one metre in several locations — enough to justify caution but not the catastrophic inundation initially feared. Indonesian authorities lifted the warning roughly three hours after the main shock, once sea-level monitoring confirmed no sustained threat. Australia’s tsunami warning centre separately confirmed there was no cross-border tsunami danger from the event.
Areas Affected
The quake’s force radiated across a wide arc of eastern Indonesia. East Nusa Tenggara province bore the brunt, with the regencies of Sikka, Nagekeo, Ende, Manggarai and East Manggarai reporting the heaviest structural damage. The port town of Maumere, capital of Sikka regency, emerged as one of the worst-hit urban centres: rescue teams there recovered 20 bodies in the initial search phase, alongside six injured and two people still trapped beneath rubble at the time. In Ruteng, Manggarai, a hospital was forced to move patients outdoors as aftershocks continued to rattle the ward buildings. Strong shaking was also felt well beyond the epicentral zone, reaching West Nusa Tenggara and parts of South Sulawesi, where tremors reportedly lasted close to a minute in some locations.
BNPB head Lieutenant General Suharyanto confirmed that at least 157 houses were destroyed outright and nearly 200 more damaged, while close to 3,300 residents of Sikka regency alone fled their homes or were left stranded, many taking shelter in a local sports arena. The East Nusa Tenggara governor, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, said at least five deaths resulted from people being crushed by collapsing rubble as they slept — a detail underscoring how the early-morning timing of the quake compounded its human cost.
Aftershocks Compound the Crisis
The Flores rupture did not arrive alone. BMKG recorded more than 235 aftershocks by mid-afternoon on the day of the main shock, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to a significant 6.0-plus jolt. Separately, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck western Sumatra’s North Sumatra province hours later — a geologically unrelated event given the distance involved, but one that briefly heightened public alarm nationwide. The USGS noted that quake occurred roughly 107 kilometres beneath the surface, a depth generally considered too great to cause significant surface damage. Among the Flores aftershocks, the USGS separately logged a 6.1 and a 5.9 magnitude jolt north of Ende, along with a locally felt magnitude 7.0 event near Ruteng that further damaged already weakened structures.
Rescue and Relief Effort
Landslides triggered by the shaking buried or isolated numerous remote villages across six regencies on Flores Island, according to Fathur Rahman, head of the Search and Rescue Office in Maumere. Some settlements, he said, were completely buried, with damaged roads and a shortage of heavy earth-moving equipment slowing every stage of the rescue. BNPB deployed three helicopters and a rescue vessel to support logistics in a province whose scattered island geography makes overland access notoriously difficult even in normal conditions. The Indonesian National Armed Forces joined evacuation and damage-assessment operations alongside BASARNAS (the national search-and-rescue agency).
On the humanitarian side, the government dispatched roughly 50,000 aid packages weighing a combined 275 tonnes to affected regencies, while the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies began preparing support for close to 2,000 people housed in temporary shelters. The European Union’s chief, Ursula von der Leyen, offered the bloc’s Copernicus Earth-observation satellite capacity to assist damage-mapping efforts — a gesture reflecting the scale of international attention the disaster has drawn within 48 hours.
Why the Region Is Vulnerable
Indonesia sits astride the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Indo-Australian, Pacific, Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates converge in one of the planet’s most seismically active zones. The Flores back-arc thrust — the specific fault system implicated in this event — has produced deadly earthquakes before; BMKG noted that the same general area was struck by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in 1992 that caused extensive destruction and loss of life, a grim historical echo that officials cited even as Saturday’s rescue operations were still under way.
