Three fast-moving fires around Spokane in eastern Washington have destroyed entire residential pockets, interrupted electricity supplies and forced approximately 60,000 to 65,000 people to leave threatened areas.
Major news agencies reported a conservative verified total of about 60,000 people evacuated and at least 600 structures destroyed. Later local reporting, citing Washington Department of Natural Resources information, placed the figures at approximately 65,000 evacuees and more than 700 destroyed homes. The difference reflects continuing damage surveys rather than two separate disasters.

Why the Fires Spread So Rapidly
The emergency developed under a dangerous combination of drought, heat, low fuel moisture and strong winds.
The National Weather Service warned that winds could gust to approximately 40–50mph in parts of eastern Washington and northern Idaho. It said the combination of strong winds, dry fuels and low relative humidity could produce rapid spread in both new and existing fires.
Washington had entered a record-setting fourth consecutive statewide drought. By 1 August, more than 1,000 fires had burned approximately 425,000 acres during the year—the state’s highest area burned since 2021. More than 200,000 acres were already burning in 12 large fires when Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency.

The evacuation figure can also move in both directions. New zones may be ordered to leave, while residents in lower-risk sectors may later be permitted to return. Consequently, “60,000–65,000 evacuated” describes the scale reported during the emergency, not necessarily the number remaining in shelters at one moment.
