Stripe and private-equity firm Advent International have jointly offered to acquire PayPal for US$60.50 per share, according to people familiar with confidential discussions cited by Reuters. The reported proposal values PayPal at more than US$53 billion and carries an estimated 28% premium to its previous closing price.
The news sent PayPal shares up nearly 17% at the Reuters market snapshot. PayPal, Stripe and Advent declined to comment, and there is no certainty that the approach will produce a completed transaction.
